Negative carryover explained (and how to avoid it)

Updated 2026-01-12 · 5 min read · AffSafe Registry Desk

Negative carryover means that when your players win more than they lose in a month, the resulting negative balance rolls into the next month instead of resetting to zero. One large winner can therefore erase several months of revenue share before you earn again.

Why operators use it

Operators argue that carryover aligns affiliate and operator risk over the lifetime of a player. In practice it transfers variance to the party least able to absorb it, because an affiliate has one revenue line while the operator has thousands of players smoothing the same variance.

The variants to look for

Full carryover rolls the entire negative balance indefinitely. Capped carryover limits how much can roll forward. Monthly reset, the term you want, zeroes the balance at month end. Some contracts also reset on a per-brand basis, which is a hidden form of carryover when a program runs many brands on one account.

How to get it removed

Ask for a monthly reset clause in writing before you send volume; it is the cheapest concession an affiliate manager can grant and most will do it for a partner with consistent traffic. If a program refuses, negotiate a hybrid or CPA deal instead so your exposure is capped, and treat the refusal as a data point about how the program handles risk.

The AffSafe Safe Mark audit checks for a documented carryover policy, which is why certified programs publish their terms rather than leaving them to individual negotiation.

Frequently asked

What is negative carryover in affiliate marketing?
Negative carryover means a negative revenue balance, caused by players winning, is carried into the following month instead of resetting to zero, delaying or cancelling future commission.
Do all casino affiliate programs use negative carryover?
No. Many programs reset the balance monthly, and most will agree to a monthly reset clause on request for affiliates sending consistent traffic.
