What separates a good affiliate manager from a great one

Every programme advertises a dedicated affiliate manager. Few explain what that manager is actually allowed to approve without escalation.
In our annual survey, affiliates ranked 'can approve a custom deal within one week' above every other attribute, including response speed and market knowledge.
The best managers we track share three habits: they send unprompted performance summaries, they disclose bad news early, and they know their own retention numbers by cohort.
Ask a prospective manager what their worst-performing geo is. The answer tells you more about the programme than any media kit.
What a great affiliate manager actually does
- Replies within one working day, including to inconvenient questions
- Volunteers a worked revenue example rather than waiting to be asked
- Flags upcoming promotions early enough for you to produce content
- Escalates tracking faults internally without needing to be chased
- Negotiates on your behalf at volume instead of quoting policy
- Tells you when your traffic quality has dropped, before the rate is cut
How to test one before you sign
Send a technical question that requires an internal answer — how deductions are calculated, or whether casino revenue from a sportsbook referral is included. Speed and specificity of the reply tell you more than any rate card.
The response you get as a prospect is the best you will ever get. A four-day answer before you have sent traffic becomes a two-week answer when your postbacks break.
Manager access is scored separately in the registry because it correlates strongly with how disputes are resolved when something goes wrong.
